Laurie graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Communications/Elementary Education. She has a Masters Degree in Reading/Language Arts from the University of Houston as well as a specialization in English as a Second Language. Laurie specializes in reading and early intervention of reading difficulties. She is a certified Reading Recovery teacher and received extensive Dyslexia training at the acclaimed Neuhaus Center in Houston. Laurie has 36 years of overall teaching experience with 21 of those years in specialized Reading/Language Arts programs. As a Reading/Language Arts specialist Laurie focused on evaluating children, working with parents, and supporting classroom teachers to create and implement balanced literacy programs. Laurie has been trained to observe, analyze, and interpret the reading and writing behaviors of students and to design and implement an individualized program to meet each student’s needs.
In addition to working with children and teachers at the school level, Laurie has received multiple recognitions and conducted reading and writing presentations at the district, state, and national levels. Her career crosses three states; Michigan, Texas, and Florida where she has been recognized as school and district level Teacher Of The Year numerous times.
Laurie presently teaches in the Hillsborough County Public School System. Although Laurie loves teaching in the classroom, she knows the benefits of working with students in a one-on-one situation. She enjoys helping children make connections in their learning and takes pride in guiding students so that they experience success and understand that they are in control of their learning. Whether working with a struggling or a gifted reader, Laurie’s philosophy is the same. Learning should be a joyful experience. She believes all children can be successful!
